Connectivity Guidelines

Connection types

  • 10 Mb connection - four hosts maximum
  • 100 Mb workstation - four hosts maximum
  • 100Mb server - one host maximum
  • 1000Mb workstation - one host maximum
  • 1000Mb server - one host maximum

Connection limits

A 60-day window allows departments to submit work orders to correct non-conforming connectivity. Orders submitted during this 60-day window will not be charged the installation fee, but will be billed the monthly recurring charge.

After the 60-day window has expired and all work orders submitted during that window are complete, ITS will notify LANAdministrators of the scheduled date for enforcement of the host limits per connection.

ITS will apply the enforcement measures during the maintenance window of 5:00 to 7:00 am on the scheduled date. Once the enforcement measures are applied, ports that exceed the maximum host limits will experience an outage.

Any issues that arise from the enforcement of the policy will become a billable item. Standard rates will apply including the onetime installation fee.

Work orders will be processed in the work load queue and will experience the normal wait time.

Wiring Standards

The objective of the standard wiring plan for the university is to provide an acceptable outlet for any communication device that requires connection to other devices, networks, or information services serving general University needs. To meet the standard of acceptability:

  • Network connections and telephone extensions cannot be shared between rooms or (in most instances) cubicles
  • All wiring will be OSHA compliant, ie., cannot wire around doors or walk pathways
  • IP devices and telephones will not exceed 25 feet from the communication outlet

To meet this standard, the policy also adheres to building, fire and safety codes and best practices as established by agencies overseeing wiring standards. NIU's policy for all new wiring and updated/upgraded wiring work specified shall be in accordance with the most current versions of the following codes and agencies:

  • National Electrical Code, Article 800
  • National Fire Code, N.F.P.A. 72A
  • Life Safety Code, N.F.P.A. 101
  • National Electronic Manufacturer's Association, NEMA
  • Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers, IEEE
  • EIA/TIA 568, Commercial Building Telecommunications Wiring Standard that includes EIA/TIA 568A, 569, 607, and TSB 75
